How is gratuity calculated in Bahrain?

Under Bahrain Labour Law No. 36 of 2012, gratuity in Bahrain is calculated on your last wage: half a month's wage for each of the first 3 years of service, then one full month's wage for every year after that. So gratuity calculated in Bahrain depends on two things only — your last monthly wage and your total years of service.
The formula: how gratuity is calculated in Bahrain
The way gratuity is calculated in Bahrain is a two-step formula, and it is simpler than it looks:
- Years 1–3: 0.5 × your last monthly wage × each year
- Year 4 onward: 1.0 × your last monthly wage × each year
Two details matter a lot. First, the calculation always uses your last wage — the wage you were earning when your service ended, not the wage you started with years ago. If you joined at BHD 300 and now earn BHD 400, the whole calculation runs on BHD 400. This last-wage basis is a key feature of how gratuity is calculated in Bahrain — a late raise lifts your entire payout. Second, your years of service count in full years as far as the brackets go, and the higher full-month rate kicks in from the fourth year onward.
Gratuity calculated in Bahrain: examples on a BHD 400 salary
Let's see how gratuity calculated in Bahrain works with real numbers. We will use a BHD 400 last monthly wage for every example:
| Years of service | Calculation | Gratuity |
|---|---|---|
| 2 years | 0.5 × BHD 400 × 2 | BHD 400 |
| 3 years | 0.5 × BHD 400 × 3 | BHD 600 |
| 5 years | (0.5 × BHD 400 × 3) + (1 × BHD 400 × 2) | BHD 1,400 |
| 10 years | (0.5 × BHD 400 × 3) + (1 × BHD 400 × 7) | BHD 3,400 |
Walk through the 5-year example slowly: the first 3 years earn half a month each, so 3 × BHD 200 = BHD 600. The next 2 years earn a full month each, so 2 × BHD 400 = BHD 800. Total: BHD 1,400. Notice how the amount jumps once you cross 3 years — this is why long-serving workers in Bahrain get a noticeably larger payout.

What counts as your "last wage"?
Because gratuity calculated in Bahrain is based on the last wage, a raise near the end of your service raises your whole payout. This is different from some other countries where gratuity is tied to your basic salary only. In Bahrain the reference is the wage you last received. Keep your last few payslips safe — if there is ever a dispute about your gratuity amount, the payslip showing your last wage is your most important document.
Gratuity calculated in Bahrain for less than 3 years
The first bracket of the formula still applies: half a month's wage per year. So 2 years on a BHD 400 last wage gives BHD 400, and 1 year gives BHD 200. That's how gratuity calculated in Bahrain works for short service too — there is no separate reduced formula for shorter periods.
Resignation uses the same formula
A common worry is whether resigning changes how gratuity is calculated in Bahrain. It does not. A worker who resigns gets the same full end-of-service gratuity, calculated with the same half-month/full-month formula — your gratuity calculated in Bahrain stays exactly the same either way. Common mistakes with gratuity calculation in Bahrain
Workers lose money when they get the formula wrong. Avoid these:
- Using your starting salary. Gratuity in Bahrain is based on your last wage. Using an old, lower salary shrinks your payout.
- Forgetting the 3-year jump. Many workers apply the half-month rate to all years. From year 4 onward, it is a full month per year.
- Rounding service down. Count your service carefully from your joining date to your last working day — partial periods still matter in the final settlement.
- Not keeping payslips. Without proof of your last wage, you cannot challenge a wrong calculation.
- Accepting the employer's number blindly. Always run the formula yourself (or with our calculator) before signing any final settlement paper.
