Under Bahrain Labour Law No. 36 of 2012, overtime in Bahrain is paid at 125% of your normal wage — one and a quarter times your usual rate. For night work, overtime is paid at 150% of your normal wage — one and a half times your usual rate.
Overtime paid in Bahrain: rates at a glance
| Type of work | Overtime rate |
|---|---|
| Ordinary overtime (daytime) | 125% of normal wage |
| Night work overtime | 150% of normal wage |
The key point: overtime in Bahrain is never paid at the plain rate. Every overtime hour is worth more than a normal working hour — and night overtime is worth even more. When checking how overtime paid in Bahrain shows on your payslip, look for a separate overtime line at 125% (or 150% for nights). If your payslip shows overtime paid at your normal rate, something is wrong and you should ask about it.
Overtime paid in Bahrain: worked example on BHD 300
Let's see how overtime paid in Bahrain works with real numbers. Take a BHD 300 monthly salary:
- Step 1 — normal hourly rate: BHD 300 ÷ 240 = BHD 1.25 per hour (dividing the monthly salary by 240 is the common method employers use to find the hourly rate).
- Step 2 — daytime overtime rate: BHD 1.25 × 125% = BHD 1.5625 per hour.
- Step 3 — night overtime rate: BHD 1.25 × 150% = BHD 1.875 per hour.
Now apply it. If you worked 8 daytime overtime hours in a month: 8 × BHD 1.5625 = BHD 12.50 of overtime pay. If you worked 8 night overtime hours: 8 × BHD 1.875 = BHD 15.00 of overtime pay. The night premium adds BHD 2.50 for the same 8 hours — over a full month of night shifts, the difference in how overtime paid in Bahrain adds up gets big, fast.
Another example: BHD 400 salary
On a BHD 400 monthly salary, the normal hourly rate is BHD 400 ÷ 240 = BHD 1.667 per hour. Daytime overtime pays BHD 1.667 × 125% = BHD 2.083 per hour, and night overtime pays BHD 1.667 × 150% = BHD 2.50 per hour. Ten night overtime hours would earn 10 × BHD 2.50 = BHD 25.00. This shows how overtime paid in Bahrain scales with your salary — the same hours are worth more on a higher wage.

Overtime paid in Bahrain for night work
The 150% rate applies to overtime done as night work — hours worked during the night period defined in the labour law. If your shifts regularly run into the night, make sure your employer is applying the 150% rate to those hours, not the 125% daytime rate. This is one of the most common overtime mistakes in Bahrain: night hours paid at the daytime rate, when overtime paid in Bahrain law requires the higher 150% for nights.
Common mistakes with overtime pay in Bahrain
Workers lose overtime money when they don't check. Avoid these:
- Overtime paid at the normal rate. Overtime in Bahrain must be at least 125% — a flat-rate overtime payment is wrong.
- Night hours paid at 125%. Night work overtime is 150%, not 125%. Check which rate your payslip used.
- Not recording your hours. Keep your own log of overtime hours — dates and times. Without records you cannot prove a shortfall.
- Assuming "salary covers everything". The legal rates still apply even if your contract mentions a fixed salary — overtime hours still earn the premium.
- Not checking the payslip. Many workers never compare their overtime hours with the payslip line. Check every month that overtime paid in Bahrain at 125% (or 150% for nights) matches the hours you actually worked.
