How much gratuity after 3 years in Qatar?

The gratuity after 3 years in Qatar equals 63 days of your last basic wage — that is 21 days for each of the 3 years. Article 54 of the Qatar Labour Law (Law No. 14 of 2004) sets this rate. You must complete at least 1 full year of service to qualify, and at 3 years you receive the full amount with no reduction for resignation. Only your basic wage counts — housing, transport and other allowances are excluded.
Calculating gratuity after 3 years in Qatar: the formula
The Qatar gratuity formula is the same for every service length — 3 years simply multiplies it by three. Here are the steps if you want to learn how to calculate gratuity in Qatar for 3 years by hand:
- Daily wage = your last basic wage ÷ 30
- Per-year amount = daily wage × 21
- 3-year total = per-year amount × 3, which is the same as (basic wage ÷ 30) × 63
- Minimum service: 1 full year — the rate of 21 days basic salary in Qatar starts applying from the first complete year
Article 54 of the Qatar Labour Law uses one flat rate: 21 days basic salary in Qatar for every year of service. There is no cap like the UAE's, and no higher band after 5 years — the same 21 days apply to year 1 and year 20. Gratuity is the main part of your Qatar end of service benefits, so getting this formula right matters for your final settlement.
Gratuity after 3 years in Qatar: worked table at 5 salary levels
The table below shows the gratuity after 3 years in Qatar at five common salary levels. Each row is calculated as daily wage × 63 (that is, 21 days × 3 years).
| Basic wage | Daily wage (÷30) | Gratuity after 3 years |
|---|---|---|
| QAR 2,000 | QAR 66.67 | QAR 4,200 |
| QAR 4,000 | QAR 133.33 | QAR 8,400 |
| QAR 6,000 | QAR 200.00 | QAR 12,600 |
| QAR 8,000 | QAR 266.67 | QAR 16,800 |
| QAR 10,000 | QAR 333.33 | QAR 21,000 |
Reading an example from the table: on QAR 6,000 basic, the daily wage is 200; 200 × 63 = QAR 12,600. Notice the straight line — 3 years at QAR 4,000 gives exactly QAR 8,400, which is twice the 1-year figure of QAR 2,800, because every extra year simply adds another 21 days.
A full calculation, line by line
Let us walk through a complete example — QAR 4,000 basic wage and exactly 3 years of service — so you can repeat it with your own numbers:
- Step 1: daily wage = 4,000 ÷ 30 = QAR 133.33
- Step 2: one year = 133.33 × 21 = QAR 2,800
- Step 3: three years = 2,800 × 3 = QAR 8,400
Handy shortcut: 3 years × 21 days = 63 days, and 63 ÷ 30 = 2.1. So the gratuity after 3 years in Qatar is always 2.1 times your monthly basic wage — 4,000 × 2.1 = QAR 8,400. 3 years vs 2 years and 5 years (QAR 4,000 example)
Many workers ask how the 3-year figure compares with shorter and longer service. The rate never changes — each extra year adds exactly 21 days (0.7 of a month). Here is the comparison on a QAR 4,000 basic wage:
| Service | Calculation | Gratuity |
|---|---|---|
| 2 years | 133.33 × 21 × 2 | QAR 5,600 |
| 3 years | 133.33 × 21 × 3 | QAR 8,400 |
| 5 years | 133.33 × 21 × 5 | QAR 14,000 |
The jump from 2 to 3 years is QAR 2,800 — exactly one year's worth. Moving from 3 to 5 years adds QAR 5,600, which is 2 × 2,800. This flat-rate design is what makes Qatar's gratuity simpler than the UAE's, where the rate changes after 5 years. If your service includes extra months — say 3 years and 6 months — those months count proportionally as 3.5 years in the formula, not zero.
Resignation vs termination after 3 years
There is no difference. Once you have completed 1 year of service, Article 54 pays the same gratuity whether you resign or your contract is terminated. This surprises many workers, because some other Gulf countries reduce gratuity for early resignation — Qatar does not. The only way resignation affects your money is if you walk out without serving your proper notice period: the employer may deduct the notice-period amount from your dues, which is separate from gratuity. The single exception to the gratuity right itself is dismissal for serious misconduct under the Labour Law. For the full picture, read our guide: Resigning in Qatar: do you keep your gratuity?
Common mistakes when calculating 3-year gratuity
These are the errors that move the final figure by thousands:
- Using gross salary instead of basic salary. The 21-days rule applies to basic wage only. Housing, transport and similar allowances are excluded — including them inflates the estimate. Check your payslip and strip them out.
- Using your starting salary instead of your last salary. The law looks at your last basic wage. A recent raise lifts the whole 3-year award; a pay cut lowers it.
- Throwing away part-years. Extra months count proportionally. 3 years and 6 months is 3.5 years in the formula: (basic ÷ 30) × 21 × 3.5.
- Assuming 3 years is not enough. It is. Full gratuity at the 21-day rate starts from the first complete year, so the gratuity after 3 years in Qatar is the full 63 days — there is no reduction and no higher band to wait for.
- Assuming resignation cuts the amount. After 1 year, resignation and termination pay exactly the same in Qatar.
- Forgetting that allowances do not count. If your contract says QAR 4,000 total but only QAR 2,500 is basic wage, your calculation must use QAR 2,500 — the gratuity is then QAR 5,250, not QAR 8,400.
