Salary late in Qatar? Your WPS rights and how to complain

Written by Usama Afzal. Last updated: October 2026. Based on Qatar Labour Law and Ministry of Labour guidance; not legal advice.

Short answer

In Qatar your salary must reach you within 7 days of the due date, paid electronically through the Wage Protection System (WPS). A delay beyond that is a labour-law violation — not just bad management. You can complain free of charge to the Ministry of Labour on 16008 (24/7).

What the WPS is

The Wage Protection System is an electronic salary-transfer system run with the Qatar Central Bank. Every private-sector employer must pay wages through approved banks or financial institutions — cash payments off the system count as a violation too. The Ministry monitors every transfer, so delays surface automatically.

What the law requires

Wages must be paid on the agreed date and no later than 7 days after it. If the 7 days pass without pay, the employer is in violation. The Labour Minister can suspend the company’s new work permits, fines can reach QAR 10,000 per worker, and repeat offenders face criminal referral.

What to do, step by step

1. Put it in writing. Email HR/finance asking when the salary will be paid, and keep the reply. 2. Wait out the 7 days from the due date — the law gives this grace period. 3. File a complaint (see below). Keep your contract, QID, pay slips and any WPS records as evidence.

How to complain

Hotline: call 16008 (24/7, Arabic and English, translators for other languages). SMS: send 5 followed by your QID or visa number to 92727. App: the Amerni app. Online: the Ministry’s Unified Platform for Complaints and Whistleblowers — you can file without revealing your identity for general violations. Email: [email protected]. All channels are free.

What happens after you file

Most cases go to mediation first — a labour officer tries to settle it between you and the employer, and many wage disputes end here. If mediation fails, the Ministry issues a failure report (usually within 60 days) and the case can go to the Labour Dispute Settlement Committee or Labour Court. Interpreters are provided free at hearings.

Can you be punished for complaining?

No. Retaliation is illegal, filing a complaint cannot lead to deportation, and if you find a new job during the dispute the Ministry can help you change employers. You don’t need a lawyer to file.

FAQ

How late is “too late” legally?

More than 7 days after the due date. Within those 7 days the employer is still compliant.

My company pays cash. Is that allowed?

No — wages must go through the WPS via approved channels. Cash off-system is itself a violation.

Is complaining really free?

Yes. Every Ministry channel — hotline, SMS, app, online platform, email — is free of charge.

I’m a domestic worker. Does this apply to me?

Yes. The complaint platform accepts complaints from domestic workers too, under the Domestic Workers Law (Law 15 of 2017).

What if the company has shut down?

File anyway. The Ministry can pursue the employer and its legal representatives; keep every document you have.
