Short answer

Never sign a final settlement in Oman until you have checked every line on this Oman final settlement checklist: your gratuity on the correct contract formula, your last salary, unused leave, notice pay, overtime, your ticket and your certificate. Money in your account first, signature second — never the other way round.

Your last day in Oman is the most pressured day of your entire contract. HR slides a paper across the desk — "received in full and final settlement" — and asks for your signature. Your bags are packed, your flight is booked, and everyone wants you out of the office quickly. That rush is exactly where workers lose money. This Oman final settlement checklist exists for that moment: read it, check your numbers, and sign only when every line is correct.

Here is why it matters. A security guard in Salalah with six years of service signed on his last afternoon and walked away with OMR 2,250. His contract had started after 31 July 2023, so under the new contract formula he was owed a full month's basic salary per year — OMR 3,000. Nobody told him the contract-date rule. OMR 750, gone, because he signed fast. Do not let that be you.

Your Oman final settlement checklist: the 10 items

Save this page on your phone and tick every line before you sign:

  1. Gratuity — calculated on your last basic salary, on the correct old/new contract formula, pro-rata for part years.
  2. Last salary — your final month's pay, in full.
  3. Unused annual leave — cashed out; this is the line most workers forget.
  4. Notice-period pay — if you did not work your notice, or the company ended the contract.
  5. Unpaid overtime — every hour on record, at the right rate.
  6. Repatriation ticket — if your contract promises an end-of-service flight home.
  7. End-of-service certificate — a written record of your job and service dates.
  8. No premature signature — do not sign "received in full" before the money lands in your account.
  9. Copies of everything — contract, payslips, leave balance, the settlement paper.
  10. A complaint route — if the figure is short, the Ministry of Labour's official complaint channels.

1. Your gratuity — the biggest line on the Oman final settlement checklist

Your gratuity is usually the largest single amount in the settlement, so check it first — and check it yourself. Run our free Oman gratuity calculator and compare its result with the company's figure. If the two numbers differ, do not sign until HR explains the gap line by line.

New contract vs old contract: which Oman gratuity calculation prices your years

In Oman there are two formulas, and your contract date decides which one prices your service. If your employment started on or after 31 July 2023 (new contract), you get at least one month's basic salary for every year of service. If it started before 31 July 2023 (old contract), you get 15 days' basic for each of the first 3 years, then a full month's basic for every year after.

Three rules apply to both formulas: only your last basic salary counts — allowances, overtime and bonuses are excluded; a day's wage is your basic salary divided by 30; and part years count pro-rata. Resigning does not reduce your gratuity — only a dismissal for serious misconduct under Article 40 can take it away. Read old vs new contract and our full Oman gratuity calculation guide.

⚠️ Watch out: if your payslip shows OMR 500 basic plus OMR 200 in allowances and HR prices your gratuity on OMR 700, that is wrong. Under Oman labour law, final settlement gratuity is counted on the basic salary only. That single mistake can cost you hundreds of rials.

2. Your last month's salary — in full

Simple, but it gets lost in the paperwork storm: your final salary must be paid in full. Check the last payslip line by line — basic, allowances, deductions — and make sure nothing was silently "adjusted" in the final month.

3. Unused annual leave — the money most workers forget

Unused leave days are paid out on top of your gratuity. Most workers never think of them, and some employers quietly hope you will not ask. Count your balance: check your leave records, multiply your unused days by your daily wage (basic ÷ 30), and put that number on your Oman final settlement checklist before the meeting. For example, 20 unused days on an OMR 500 basic = (500 ÷ 30) × 20 = OMR 333.33 that belongs to you. Confirm the exact rate with HR, but never let this line sit at zero without a written reason.

4. Notice-period pay — if you did not work it

If either side ends the contract without the other working the notice period, notice pay is owed. For monthly-paid workers that is usually 30 days' wages — on an OMR 500 basic, that is another OMR 500 on the table. Read what the notice period in Oman is and make sure this line appears when it applies to you.

5. Overtime you were never paid for

Check your attendance and overtime records against your payslips. Night work, rest-day work and extra hours all carry their own rates — our guide to overtime pay in Oman explains them. Even a few unrecorded hours each month add up over years of service.

6. Your end-of-service flight ticket

If your contract promises a return ticket when you leave, it belongs in the settlement. Many workers pay for their own flight home and never claim this back. Read your contract — if the ticket is written there, the company owes it.

7. Your end-of-service certificate

Ask for a written service certificate: your name, job title, and start and end dates. It costs the company nothing and protects you later — for your next job, your visa file, and any dispute about how long you worked.

8. The "received in full" paper — sign nothing early

This is where most money is lost. Some workers are asked to sign a receipt saying they received their full settlement before the transfer arrives. Do not sign it. Money in your account first, signature second — always. Ask for a written breakdown of every line instead, take it home, and check it against your own Oman final settlement checklist.

9. Keep copies of everything

Photograph or copy every paper before you hand anything back: your contract, your last 12 payslips, your leave balance, the settlement breakdown, and the signed receipt. Once you are out of the country, papers left in an office drawer are gone forever — and so is your proof.

10. If the amount is short — the Ministry of Labour

If the final figure does not match your calculation and HR will not correct it, you can raise it through the Ministry of Labour's official complaint channels. File while you still have your copies and your records are fresh. Also read whether resignation affects gratuity in Oman — in most cases it does not, so a low figure is rarely "because you resigned".

Worked example: an Oman final settlement checklist calculation with OMR 500

Let us walk through the numbers step by step. Say your last basic salary was OMR 500 and you completed exactly 6 years.

New contract (started on or after 31 July 2023): one month's basic × 6 years = 500 × 6 = OMR 3,000.

Old contract (started before 31 July 2023): first 3 years at 15 days' basic: (500 ÷ 30) × 15 = OMR 250 per year → 250 × 3 = OMR 750. Next 3 years at one month's basic: 500 × 3 = OMR 1,500. Total = 750 + 1,500 = OMR 2,250.

Same worker, same salary — a OMR 750 difference decided only by the contract date. Now run the same two formulas on your own dates with the Oman gratuity calculator, add your leave, notice pay and overtime, and you have your number. If the company's number is lower, ask why — line by line. That is what all the end of service benefits Oman owes you, checked and verified by you.

Frequently asked questions

What is included in Oman final settlement?

Gratuity, your last salary, unused leave encashment, notice pay where it applies, unpaid overtime, and anything your contract promises — such as a repatriation ticket — plus your end-of-service certificate.

How is Oman gratuity calculated for final settlement?

On your last basic salary: a month's basic per year for contracts starting on or after 31 July 2023; for earlier contracts, 15 days' basic for the first 3 years then a month per year. Part years count pro-rata.

Can my employer ask me to sign a "received in full" receipt in Oman?

They may ask — but sign only after the money is in your account and every line matches your own calculation. Never sign first.

What if my employer pays less than my final settlement in Oman?

Ask HR for a written breakdown first. If it still does not match, you can raise the dispute through the Ministry of Labour's official complaint channels.

Does unused annual leave get paid in final settlement in Oman?

Yes — unused leave days are paid out separately from gratuity. Never sign a settlement that quietly sets this line to zero.

Remember: the company counts on you being in a hurry on your last day. Slow down, check every line on this Oman final settlement checklist, and let your signature be the last thing that happens — not the first.
