Is gratuity calculated on basic salary in Qatar?

Yes. In Qatar, gratuity is calculated on basic salary only — your last basic monthly wage, not your total salary with allowances. Under Article 54 of Qatar's Labour Law (Law No. 14 of 2004), you get 21 days of your last basic wage for every year of service: (last basic salary ÷ 30) × 21 × years. So with a QAR 8,000 basic salary and 6 years of service, your Qatar gratuity is QAR 33,600 — even if your payslip showed QAR 10,000 a month with a housing allowance. You need at least 1 year of service; allowances, overtime and bonuses are all excluded from the calculation.
Is gratuity calculated on basic salary in Qatar? The short answer
Here is the one-line version of whether gratuity is calculated on basic salary in Qatar:
The rest of this guide shows what that rule costs real workers: which parts of your pay count, a worked example with real riyals, a quick-reference table, and the contract tricks that shrink the payout. To skip the maths, run our free Qatar gratuity calculator — it applies the same Article 54 formula on your basic salary.
What counts as ‘basic salary’ for Qatar gratuity?
When the law says gratuity is calculated on basic salary in Qatar, it means the basic wage line in your employment contract — the fixed monthly figure before any allowances, overtime or bonuses are added. This is usually the largest single line on your payslip, but not always, and that is where the trouble starts.
- It is the LAST basic salary that counts. If you started at QAR 6,000 and ended at QAR 8,000, your gratuity uses QAR 8,000 — every year is valued at your final basic wage, not a mix of old rates.
- It must be in your contract. The basic salary is whatever your signed contract says it is. Verbal promises and payslip ‘totals’ do not override it.
How to find your basic salary on a Qatar payslip
Look for the line labelled ‘basic salary’ or ‘basic wage’ — ignore the lines for housing, transport, food, and the ‘total’ or ‘gross’ figure at the bottom. If your contract shows basic QAR 8,000 + housing allowance QAR 2,000, your Qatar gratuity is calculated on the QAR 8,000 only. Take a photo of this page of your contract now; you will need it at final settlement.
Which allowances are excluded from Qatar gratuity?
All of them. Because gratuity is calculated on basic salary in Qatar, every allowance your employer pays is left out of the maths:
- Housing allowance
- Transport allowance
- Food allowance
- Cost-of-living allowance
- Mobile / education allowances
This is the single most misunderstood part of the Qatar end-of-service rules. Many workers see a monthly ‘total’ of QAR 10,000 on their payslip and assume the gratuity follows that number. It does not. The law's wording is deliberate: gratuity is a share of the basic wage, and allowances are not wages. If your payslip bundles everything into one line with no basic salary shown, ask HR for a written breakdown before you sign anything — you are entitled to know which figure is your basic.
Overtime, bonuses and commissions don’t count either
The basic-salary rule goes further than allowances. Also excluded from your Qatar gratuity calculation:
- Overtime pay (however many extra hours you worked)
- Annual bonuses and performance incentives
- Commissions and tips
- One-off payments and ex-gratia amounts
The principle is simple: if it is not your fixed basic salary, it does not enter the formula. This is why two workers with the same QAR 10,000 monthly ‘take-home’ can have very different gratuities — the one with the higher basic salary walks away with more. When you compare job offers in Qatar, compare the basic salary line, not the total.
Worked example: QAR 8,000 basic + QAR 2,000 allowance, 6 years
Meet a driver whose contract says: basic salary QAR 8,000, housing allowance QAR 2,000. He worked 6 full years. Because gratuity is calculated on basic salary in Qatar, only the QAR 8,000 enters the formula:
- Daily wage. 8,000 ÷ 30 = QAR 266.67 per day.
- One year's gratuity. 266.67 × 21 = QAR 5,600 per year of service.
- Multiply by service. 5,600 × 6 = QAR 33,600.
Qatar gratuity table: basic salary vs years of service
Every figure below uses basic salary only — this is how much gratuity on basic salary in Qatar pays out for the most common wages, using (basic ÷ 30) × 21 × years:
| Basic salary / month | After 3 years | After 5 years | After 10 years |
|---|---|---|---|
| QAR 5,000 | 10,500 | 17,500 | 35,000 |
| QAR 8,000 | 16,800 | 28,000 | 56,000 |
| QAR 10,000 | 21,000 | 35,000 | 70,000 |
| QAR 12,000 | 25,200 | 42,000 | 84,000 |
| QAR 15,000 | 31,500 | 52,500 | 105,000 |
Notice how clean the scaling is: double the basic salary, double the gratuity. And because Qatar sets no two-year wage ceiling (unlike the UAE), your award keeps growing year after year. For more worked numbers, see our Qatar gratuity worked examples.
Watch out: allowance-heavy contracts shrink your gratuity
Protect yourself: read the basic salary line before you sign the contract, not at final settlement when it is too late. If an offer looks generous on the total, ask what the basic is. And never sign a contract amendment that moves part of your basic into allowances without understanding that your gratuity drops with it. For the full calculation walkthrough, see how gratuity is calculated in Qatar.
Does the basic-salary rule change if you resign?
No. Whether you resign or your contract ends, gratuity is calculated on basic salary in Qatar at the same 21-day rate. Qatar — unlike Saudi Arabia's old tier system — does not cut the award for resigning workers. See Qatar gratuity on resignation for the full rules.
The award is only lost entirely if you are dismissed for serious misconduct under Article 61. And if your employer simply refuses to pay the correct amount, you have a clear complaint path — our guide to complaining about unpaid gratuity in Qatar walks through it step by step.
Unused leave and final settlement: also on basic salary
Your final settlement is more than gratuity, and the basic-salary logic runs through it: unused annual leave is also cashed out at your last basic wage rate (see our Qatar annual leave guide). Notice-period pay, if you worked it, follows your normal wage. When HR hands you the final settlement sheet, check that the gratuity line uses your basic salary — not the total — and that unused leave is a separate, itemised line.
Your 5-minute Qatar gratuity checklist
- Confirm you completed at least 1 full year of service (months count — partial years are pro-rata).
- Pull your last basic salary from your contract or payslip — not the total with allowances.
- Apply the formula: (basic ÷ 30) × 21 × years — or run the free Qatar gratuity calculator and compare.
- If you resigned, the amount is the same — resignation does not reduce Qatar gratuity.
- Do NOT sign the final settlement until every line (gratuity + unused leave + notice pay) is itemised and the gratuity line matches your own calculation.

Frequently asked questions
Is gratuity calculated on basic salary in Qatar?
Yes. In Qatar, gratuity is calculated on basic salary only — your last basic monthly wage, not your total salary with allowances. Under Article 54 of Qatar's Labour Law, you get 21 days of your last basic wage per year of service: (last basic ÷ 30) × 21 × years. You need at least 1 year of service; allowances, overtime and bonuses are excluded.
Does gratuity include housing allowance in Qatar?
No. Housing allowance — like transport, food and all other allowances — is excluded, because gratuity is calculated on basic salary in Qatar. Only the basic wage line in your contract enters the formula. A QAR 8,000 basic + QAR 2,000 housing allowance uses QAR 8,000.
Is Qatar gratuity calculated on gross salary or total salary?
Neither. Qatar gratuity is calculated on basic salary, not gross or total salary. With an 8,000 basic + 2,000 allowance over 6 years, the correct award is QAR 33,600 — the QAR 42,000 figure from the 10,000 total is wrong and no labour committee will award it.
What is the gratuity formula in Qatar for basic salary?
Gratuity = (last basic monthly salary ÷ 30) × 21 × years of service, under Article 54 of Qatar Labour Law No. 14 of 2004. That equals 0.7 × basic salary × years. You must complete at least 1 year of service; partial years count proportionally.
Do I get gratuity in Qatar if I resign?
Yes, the full amount. Resignation does not reduce Qatar gratuity — the same 21-day basic-salary rate applies whether you resign or your employer ends the contract. The award is lost only on dismissal for serious misconduct under Article 61.
