Short answer

Calculating gratuity in Qatar is simple: (your last basic monthly salary ÷ 30) × 21 × years of service. That is 21 days of your final basic wage for every year you worked, under Article 54 of Qatar's Labour Law (Law No. 14 of 2004). So with a QAR 8,000 basic salary and 6 years of service, your Qatar gratuity is QAR 33,600. You need at least 1 year of service, and allowances, overtime and bonuses are excluded from the calculation.

How to calculate gratuity in Qatar: the short answer

If you only want the one-line version of how to calculate gratuity in Qatar, here it is:

Qatar gratuity = (last basic monthly salary ÷ 30) × 21 × years of service. Only the basic salary goes into the formula — never the total salary with allowances.

The rest of this guide walks you through that formula with real riyals, a quick-reference table, and the mistakes that cost workers thousands. Want the answer instantly? Run our free Qatar gratuity calculator — it applies the same Article 54 formula on your basic salary.

The Qatar gratuity formula, step by step

Learning how to calculate gratuity in Qatar means doing three small sums. Take a cleaner whose contract says: basic salary QAR 6,000, and who worked 4 years and 6 months (4.5 years):

  1. Find your daily wage. 6,000 ÷ 30 = QAR 200 per day.
  2. Find one year's gratuity. 200 × 21 = QAR 4,200 for each year of service.
  3. Multiply by your service. 4,200 × 4.5 = QAR 18,900.

That QAR 18,900 is the full gratuity — no tiers, no deductions for the way you left. Notice how every step uses the basic salary only, and the 4.5 years counts exactly as 4.5 — partial years are paid pro-rata in Qatar.

The easy shortcut to calculate gratuity in Qatar: 0.7 × basic × years

Because 21 ÷ 30 = 0.7, you can skip two steps: Qatar gratuity = 0.7 × last basic salary × years. Check: 0.7 × 6,000 × 4.5 = QAR 18,900 — the same answer. Every year you work in Qatar earns you 70% of one month's basic salary as gratuity.

Qatar gratuity calculation table: how to calculate gratuity in Qatar for any salary

Every figure below uses the basic salary only — this is how to calculate gratuity in Qatar for the most common wages, using (basic ÷ 30) × 21 × years:

Basic salary / monthAfter 3 yearsAfter 5 yearsAfter 10 years
QAR 5,00010,50017,50035,000
QAR 6,00012,60021,00042,000
QAR 8,00016,80028,00056,000
QAR 10,00021,00035,00070,000
QAR 12,00025,20042,00084,000
QAR 15,00031,50052,500105,000

Notice the clean scaling: double the basic salary and double the years, and the gratuity quadruples. And unlike the UAE — which caps gratuity at two years' wages — Qatar lets your award keep growing year after year. For more worked numbers, see our Qatar gratuity worked examples.

What salary goes into the Qatar gratuity formula?

The last basic salary — the basic-wage line in your final contract, not your total monthly pay. Housing, transport and food allowances, overtime, bonuses and commissions are all excluded (we cover the full list in our guide on whether gratuity is calculated on basic salary in Qatar).

It is the last basic salary that counts: if you started at QAR 5,000 and ended at QAR 8,000, every year of service is valued at QAR 8,000 — your final basic wage, not a mix of old rates.

Important: some contracts keep the basic salary line low and push money into allowances. That is legal — but it quietly shrinks your end-of-service award, because when you calculate gratuity in Qatar only the basic line enters the formula. Always compare the basic salary (not the total) when judging job offers.

Why calculating Qatar gratuity is simpler than the UAE or Saudi

Workers who have calculated gratuity in the UAE or Saudi Arabia find Qatar refreshingly simple:

That simplicity is good news: one formula, one answer, and no fine print to trip over.

Who qualifies? The one-year rule when you calculate gratuity in Qatar

You must complete at least 1 year of continuous service to earn any gratuity. Leave before 12 months and the law awards nothing (see our guide to leaving Qatar before one year).

Past the one-year mark, extra months count proportionally: 3 years and 6 months is 3.5 in the formula. There is no rounding up — but also no rounding down.

Watch out: 4 mistakes when you calculate gratuity in Qatar

When workers calculate gratuity in Qatar wrong, it is almost always one of these:

  1. Using the total salary. Putting QAR 10,000 (basic + allowances) in the formula instead of QAR 8,000 (basic only) inflates your expectation by QAR 8,400 on 6 years — money no labour committee will award.
  2. Skipping the ÷30 step. It is 21 days of wages, not 21 months. Basic salary ÷ 30 gives the daily wage first.
  3. Dropping the extra months. 4 years 6 months is 4.5, not 4.
  4. Signing the final settlement without checking. HR sheets can carry the wrong basic figure. Check your gratuity line against the formula before you sign (see what your Qatar final settlement must include).

Does resigning reduce your Qatar gratuity? No

Unlike the old UAE system, resignation does not cut a single riyal in Qatar. Quit, finish your contract or get laid off — the formula and the answer are identical. The only way to lose the award is dismissal for serious misconduct under Article 61. Read the full rules in our Qatar resignation gratuity guide.

And any clause asking you to waive your gratuity is void — the law does not let you sign this right away, even if you wanted to.

What if your employer won't pay?

If the company stalls or offers a lower number, don't argue at the desk — calculate the correct figure first with our Qatar gratuity calculator, then follow the formal complaint route: the Ministry of Labour hotline 16008, the Amerni app, or a labour committee case. Our step-by-step Qatar unpaid-gratuity complaint guide walks you through it.

Frequently asked questions

How to calculate gratuity in Qatar for 5 years?

Use (last basic salary ÷ 30) × 21 × 5. With a QAR 8,000 basic salary that is (8,000 ÷ 30) × 21 × 5 = QAR 28,000. Allowances are excluded, and you need at least 1 year of service — the formula works the same whether you resign or your contract ends.

What is the gratuity formula in Qatar?

Qatar gratuity = (last basic monthly salary ÷ 30) × 21 × years of service — in short, 0.7 × basic salary × years — under Article 54 of Qatar's Labour Law (Law No. 14 of 2004).

Is gratuity calculated on basic salary in Qatar?

Yes — on the last basic salary only, never the total with allowances. Our full breakdown explains which pay lines count and which don't.

How much gratuity after 10 years in Qatar with a QAR 10,000 basic salary?

QAR 70,000: (10,000 ÷ 30) × 21 × 10. Qatar sets no two-year wage cap, so the award keeps growing. See our 10-year Qatar gratuity guide for more durations.

Can I calculate my Qatar gratuity before signing the final settlement?

Yes — and you should. Run the (basic ÷ 30) × 21 × years formula or our free calculator, then compare every line of the settlement sheet against your contract's basic salary before you sign.
